DIY Remote Start
I rarely do my own car repairs, but can manage basic tasks. Is installing remote start a fairly basic task? I'm sure the part/kit comes with instructions, but how complicated is it for a 2011 RAV4?
Thanks in advance.

I would recommend you have the kit installed by someone who is familiar with working with auto electric circuits.
You could turn a $50.00 job into a $500.00 repair with the slip of a wire cutter or short circuit.

I've installed 100's of remote car starters. At one time they were basic kits and the anti theft system (chip in the key) had to be carefully modified and connected to. Now they make direct plug in kits for select cars.
I believe you have push button starting....you might be able to get one from Directed Electronics that plugs in directly. Those usually run about $150-$200. Wouldn't hurt to research it. Some knowledge of car wiring would certainly be helpful.

Thank you all. Crutchfield sells one that fits my car. The install process seems somewhat similar to installing a car radio, but slightly worse. If I could really pay $50 labor to get that $200 kit installed, it would definitely be worth it. I will explore that first.

I've found the Crutchfield kits and instructions to be quite good as well as their tech support if you have any questions. If getting it from them I'd be willing to try it.

I don't even attempt them myself anymore... For what you save to install yourself is not worth the aggravation..
Ive had mine installed at the local best buy... Both basic models I have had installed with just car start abilities and unlock feature costs me $200-$250 complete..
Well worth it IMO...
