2000 Impala, intake manifold blew up while jumping car, why?

My son was jump starting his car yesterday.

2000 Impala LS, 3.8L engine

Anyway, he says when he was jumping it that the intake manifold blew apart, at least a big chunk out of it. I am not there. He is in Missouri and I am in NC.

I am just looking for suggestions as to what may have caused this? He hit a deer a couple of weeks ago that did some damage to the left front corner of the car and he has been driving it since.

Just ideas is all I am looking for. Thanks

My first guess would be he used starting fluid and the vapors in the manifold ignited.

pretty much had to back fire through the intake and since there plastic not as strong as a aluminum manifold would of been, not a very common problem but have read of it happening before.

His car timing is off. Hence, it wouldn't start. Then, it backfired into intake. Most likely timing belt or chain related.

The scenario in each response is reasonable for a plastic manifold to explode. However you need to get more info from your son to understand his experience. A couple I can think of; Why was he jumpering the vehicle? Did he connect the negative jumper last and make it away from the battery? Was he using a starter fluid?
