2008 outlander 4wd service

I have a 2008 Mitsubishi outlander xls, when put into 4wd and driven just a few feet 4wd lock and service required start flashing. 4wd is working normally and there are no other lights. If put back into 2wd it still flashes 4wd lock and stays in 4wd. To get it to stop you have to turn the car off and back on. Doing so puts the car back into 2wd with no lights. I had a similar problem last year where it was locking 4wd all the time and there was no getting around it but the abs light was also on and replacing a wheel bearing solved it. This time it only locks when placed into 4wd and there is no abs light. The only thing I've found were for lancers doing this and needing a new pump. I'm not sure how the transfer case works on these to diagnose myself. I can hear it click into 4wd and once restarted back into 2wd so I don't think its that mechanism. Any thoughts?

You need ABS capable scanner that can read ABS/brake codes. Preferably, one that can read Mitsu codes. That's starting point.
