PCV valve

My ranger 2003 3.0 V6, started to act a little funny and the check engine light came on. I took it to autozone and their code read bad PCV valve and misfire on cylinder 4. I am going to change the PCV, however I think the misfire might be a bad spark plug or wire. Can a bad PCV cause a misfire?
Thanks

Pcv valve

There is no code for pcv..... What code did you get besides p0304. Stuck open pcv would cause a vaccum leak possible lean code. Would not cause a single cylinder misfire. Do you notice any driveability problems does the mil flash under load?

See how cylinder 4 plug and wire look? Could switch with another cylinder and see if miss follows plug or wire .Is this an intermittent miss or all the time ... At idle or under load?

Pcv valve

See if dirty maf ... Clean with brake cleaner or maf cleaner or rubbing alcohol blow dry. Could be low fuel pressure affecting both banks Clean maf clear codes and see if codes return or symptoms persist.

acting a little funny is not a very good description of the problem I would probably just change the plugs and wires if its been awhile its normal maintenance items anyway.

how does it run when you first start in the morning cold does it surge or does it run bad ?

might also want to get a cheap code reader or scanner so you can clear the codes after doing repairs and see what codes return.

I checked the wire and and cap on #4, but have not pulled the plug yet. Now I have my own code reader. I cleaned my MAS with connector spray. However, I couldn't get that little plastic place piece off. It requires a special tool, the screws look like a hex , but it has metal inside. The car seems to start fine. After I'm on the highway they check engine light starts blinking and I can feel some hesitation.

...the screws look like a hex , but it has metal inside,
Those are torx-head security screws. What I do is cut a straight slit in the heads with a Dremel tool and then remove them with a regular screwdriver. Then I throw them out and replace them with similar-sized phillips head screws.

P0174 and P0171 are lean codes for both banks. "Lean" means too much air and/or not enough fuel is being burned. In many cases, lean on both banks can be traced to low fuel pressure, or vacuum (air) leaks in the system, such as a failed intake manifold gasket or a hole in a vacuum hose that is common to both banks.

However, with regard to the Ford 3.0L "Vulcan" engine, there has been known issues with failing camshaft position synchronizer shafts which in turn can cause fuel injection timing issues. This might account for the misfire codes. See: Ford 3.0L Camshaft Position Sensor/Synchronizer Issues

Another known issue with regard to the 3.0L vulcan engine is bad heads from the factory. There is a Technical Service Bulletin that Ford put out which details the problem. Even though the TSB talks only about 2004-2006 years, I’ve read about similar head problems in 2003 models.

See: Ford TSB 05-26-3
