Engine shuts off when parking brake on and try to go

My old 2001 Daewoo Matiz (automatic, 80,000 KM, bought used) did something strange a while back. I was parked and had the parking brake up. I forgot to release the brake and put it down, and when I turned the car on to proceed, the engine just shut off as soon as I put my foot to the pedal.

I tried this twice and both times it shut off. Then I realized the parking brake was up and I released it, put it down, turned the car on again and proceed no problems.

Does anyone know why this might have happened? What issues might my car have if it does this? Normally cars do not shut off even if the parking brake is on. You can still drive with the parking brake on (you'll just feel slower and sluggish and you'll wear it and possibly damage brakes).

I've never experienced any car/vehicle I've driven to just turn off/die just because the brake was on and I stepped on the gas.

Mechanically there is no connection but there must be a safety disconnect switch that is shutting down the engine if brake is not disconnected, similar to trying to start the engine if a manual clutch is not engaged!

How well does the car run? If it's in bad need of a tune up it might not have enough power to overcome the brake.

Does the car have an automatic transmission or a standard?
If it is standard I would expect the engine to stall if the brake is on.

It would mean you have a good brake AND a good clutch ...

They said it's automatic and it if were a stick, I'm sure they'd be aware of how to keep it running, if that were the problem..

Yes, it's an automatic. I'm going to pick the answer that suggested maybe I didn't have enough power to run the car with the brake on or maybe it's an auto shut off. I had engine oil below the minimum line so maybe that was the cause? I just got the oil topped off and I'm too afraid to try now and see if it works with the parking brake on.

I don't mean to be a smart A$$ - but I'm going to. This falls in the category of the Henny Youngman joke:
The patient says "Doctor, it hurts when I do this." "Then don't do that!"

I would really not try to duplicate the problem.
