2003 Ford Taurus: stuck in park

my 2003 ford taurus won't come out of park. I have brake lights. this shifter is on the column

There is a brake shift interlock that should be activated when you step in the brake petal.

There might be info in the owners manual to activate it in an emergency. You will have to do this each time you want to take it out of park so the sooner you fix it the better.

Does the gearshift lever move and nothing happens or the shifter lever won't release.
Depending on what is stuck.... it could be defective shift release solenoid above the shifter or a broken transmission cable.

Husband had that happen to his truck a couple of years ago and it turned out to be a broken wire that connects the brake to the shifter. Well it was the wire leading to the brake. May be phrasing it wrong, but hopefully you know what I'm talking about! I know it could be a couple of other things, but thought I'd mention it.
