Welcome to the forums.
The speed sensor that controls the speedometer ?
Typically it's in the tail shaft of the transmission.

Terrible vehicles. Not reliable, not particularly well built or especially good at anything. Seriously, they are towards the very bottom of their class for just about everything. Not to put too fine a point on it, but you're looking for a small SUV around that age and price range, almost anything else is better than that. Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, even a Kia Sportage. Take your pick. Any of them are a much better choice.

You're seriously recommending the OP get rid of the vehicle because he needs to know where the speed sensor is? It's 20 years old and still on the road, seems to be somewhat reliable...

It's interesting..... my parents still have the same exact Jeep.
It has been extremely reliable. Still in great shape and running well.
They do not go four wheeling off-road which may be the difference to what you are describing.

IMO Jeep doesn't make a great vehicle. Both my 2010 Wrangler and the 1990 Cherokee it replaced have needed a lot of repairs sooner than other vehicles I've owned. That said I do believe they make the best stock 4x4. Other than my mountain driveway I don't do any 4 wheeling.
My stepson used to have a 2002 Liberty. It was decent until it lost a cylinder at 130k
Nothing wrong with maintaining an older vehicle, it's paid for and you know the history.

Have they ever been made by Jeep? It's been a Chrysler product since the late 80s when they took over from American Motors who got it from Kaiser. Ironically Willys invented the jeep but the gov't thought they were too small for the war effort and gave the contract to Ford.
