wrong oil

wrong oil

I went to town to get 2 qts of oil. 5w20 for my jeep and 20w50 for my tractor. Not sure how I goofed but I put the 20w50 in my jeep So there is 1 qt of 20w50 mixed with 5 qts of 5w20. How bad did I screw up? It's a 2010 Jeep JK with 91k miles.

jeep uses oil I guess probably would just run it as its mixed with enough 5 w 20 its not going to make a huge difference it will be corrected next oil change which may not be that far off I am guessing if you had to add a quart.

Since it's diluted with the correct oil, once it mixes and if you average it all out, you now have 7.5w25 oil in the vehicle. Not the end of the world, but not good for it either. I'd change it as soon as it's convenient to do so.

It's only been 1k miles since I last changed the oil. While I believe Jeep makes some of the best 4x4s they do build a lousy vehicle. It's been using oil since the 60k mark. 3 of the calipers didn't even last that long. Don't get me started on the plastic shifter bushings. Unless it will determental to the engine I'd be inclined to leave for another 2500 miles.

I'm not the expert, but I agree with XSleeper. You're in TN... not in NY Its not going to cause any serious issues for a bit.

Hey, its 5/20 or 20/50........ its 20 wt oil on one end or the other.

The more attentive issue would be if its sythetic for the car & conventional for the tractor. I wouldn't mix that.

I'm going to edit & add this:
My 2007 Ram 1500 5.7 Hemi owners manual says to use 5/20. I have always used 10/30 in mine. I've got 241,000 miles on it now. Over the past year, it has began to use a bit of oil between 5000 mile changes. I have found myself out of 10/30 & used regular 30 wt until my next oil change.
I'll admit 50 wt is high for an automobile but it's still 20 wt on the low end & again, I run 10/30 in mine. I have no complaints. So even 30 is still above the 20 wt.

I wouldnt loose any sleep over it, especially because its mixed with an additional 4 or 5 qts of 5+ wt, but I dont think I'd run it very long just to be safe. Again, I've used a quart of regular 30 wt on occasion until my next oil change. One quart isnt a deal breaker I dont think. I'll admit though... mine is 6 quarts. Yours is probably 5 qts?

Right now the low end of the viscosity rating is what is important being cold. Your far from sub zero temps so the diff between 5 and 7.5 is negligible. IMO it's not going to hurt anything!

I use a synthetic blend in the jeep, just straight oil in the tractor ..... if that makes a difference.

As I mentioned in my post 5 above. Again, I'm an old school mechanic, before synthetics, but most people who are supposed to know, say dont swap up. You can go from conventional to synthetic, but your not supposed to go back or go from synthetic to conventional.
Honestly, I dont know much about that. But just based on what I've been told since the synthetic craze, in all honesty, I probably wouldn't run it. But again, I don't know. Marq seems to be more knowledgeable on this newer stuff & TowGuy is pretty knowledgeable. They may be able to give you some better educated or 1st hand advice than me.

I really, honestly don't know how serious the risk is here.

Since it's all newer oil, I agree.
My caveat is that, if you DO get cold snap where the temperature is below freezing, then IIWY, I'd let the engine idle long enough to warm up (I.E. the radiator thermostat opens and the heat works) so that you're reasonably sure that you don't have any 'oil snot' of cold 20w50 blocking the flow.

mehhh... unless you live in Arctic circle... no issue. But then you don't shut down engine ever anyway.
