Screen display goes black about once a year

2013 Honda Civic -- My car is 10 years old and I've had this little problem that happens about once per year on average. I'll start up the car, start backing out of the driveway, and notice that the screen display isn't displaying the radio information. Preset buttons that change the station don't work either. I think it still displays the time, but I can't really remember because this happens so infrequently. Eventually, the screen starts working again on its own or after I park and turn off the engine, then start again. It seems like some sort of computer software quirk -- like Microsoft Windows acts up once in a blue moon.
I was wondering if this is just a common quirk.

 

That screens shows many vehicle functions...... doesn't it ?
It's not an integral part of the radio.

The radio feeds data thru the vehicle data bus to the display as well as info like doors open, tire pressure, etc.
You weren't sure about clock.
How about everything else ?
Was the radio actually playing ?

 

You can toggle through 4 different functions on the screen. One is just a clock. Another is mainly radio. I usually keep it set to display temperature outside, mileage, radio and time. Tire pressure is not on this screen. The screen just shows the camera view behind the car when you shift into reverse.
The radio plays fine when the screen fails. The controls on the steering wheel that control the radio still work when this screen fails.
I think it's some sort of firmware or software glitch that has to do with shifting into reverse shortly after starting up the car.

 

I've seen the display remain dark until the vehicle power was removed and restored.

Fixing a problem like that would probably be a flash upgrade from the dealer for the ECU.

 

What does ECU stand for? What would you guess is the cost of such an upgrade (parts and labor)? Can a DIY person do this task?

 

Electronic (or engine) Control Unit

I would say not a DIY job as the ECU needs to be flashed with the vehicles VIN and other operation perimeters which needs special tools.
