Electric steering makes noise

2013 Buick Lacrosse makes a growling or groaning noise when turning as I back out of my garage, meaning crawl speeds. I donít know if it makes this noise at normal driving speeds as I do not hear well. No problems with steering feel at any speed. If I idle up the motor and turn the wheels while parked I can still hear the noise. Is this steering motor failing? I understand they are quite costly.

Any idea of whether this is eminent or could it go for some time before failure? I’ve had cars with seemingly failing starter motors and wailing fuel pumps that went for years without failure. Don’t want to be caught on the highway without steering but also don’t want to replace if this noise is somewhat common and could go years yet.

Have it scoped by technician. You won't lose steering, it will simply become very hard to steer. But it's electronics, better left for those with Know-how and proper equipment.
