1997 Ford Taurus heating problem

My '97 Ford Taurus will only put out warm air for about 10 seconds, and then all it puts out is cold air. If I turn the switch off for 10 or 15 minutes, it will again put out warm air for 10 seconds and then go cold. Does anyone know what the problem might be?

Check that your radiator and overflow are to the proper level with coolant.

Barring that, warm up the car. Feel the hoses going to the firewall and the heater core. If they are hot, the problem is inside the car with the vent door. If they are not, the thermostat may be bad or it has other cooling system issues.

What is the 8th digit of your VIN?

There's a recall on some 1997 Taurus/Sable models, but it only applies to certain engines. Let us know the 8th digit of your VIN & we can see if the recall applies to you.

Also, does you car have electronic or manual climate control?
