gm steering column

I have a 1985 full size chevy van with a tilt steering wheel. The rack broke in the steering column. I have the rebuild kit for the rack but i am having a really hard time getting the column apart. Any input on how to do this will really be appreciated. Thanks! Don

Do you have the necessary tools?

You're going to need a steering wheel puller, a lock plate depressor and a tilt pin remover (or a couple of 8-32 machine screws and some diagonal pliers).

Do you have an exploded view of the column? I can probably post one here if you don't

A good service manual will be necessary to complete the job. While it's not absolutely necessary, it'll sure make things easier. A Haynes manual *may* have the info you need. If not, check the local public library for a professional service manual (Mitchell or Motors or genuine GM).

Or, pay Alldata.com 25 bucks a year and you'll have access to all the wiring diagrams and exploded views from the factory manual (which is mostly where they get their information).

Well worth the greenbacks in this case.
