88 mercury tracer wont start

Last night I was driving to the convience store and the car suddenly cut out.
I tried to restart it and the started just spins, it doesnt make the clicking noise I'm used to hearing in a similar situation though.
The oil light has been coming on and off ever since I installed a new stereo last saturday but when I checked on tuesday it still had plenty of oil.

But last night after I couldnt get it started again I checked it again and it was bone dry. I dont know if this had anything to do with it shutting off or not but the car seemed to be running just fine right up until it kicked off. I put 3 quarts in it today and it is back the the half way inbetween spot but it still wont start of course.
I have pretty limited knowledge of cars, so all I knew to do was check all the fuses inside and out. They are all still good.
The battery seems to be good since everything still works electrically speaking.

Any ideas?
