Intermittent Electrical Problems with 1988 Nissan Maxima

I have a 1988 Nissan Maxima with electronic gauges. Lately, the speedometer only works part of the time. When it's working, the odometer works and so does cruise control. When the digital speedometer begins showing zero (may happen at any time), the cruise control (if it is engaged) will kick off and the odometer will not register. Can you tell me what I need to check to fix this problem?

Might have a bad control head or a short. Ahhh, old Japanese cars, they soak you good when all the gadgetry goes awry when they get old.

The control head can be checked by any parts store. They can send the speedo head out to their remanufactured electronics provider and have it tested for a fee.

Intermittent Electrical Problems with a 1988 Nissan Maxima

I have contacted a NAPA Parts store and an Advanced Auto store and neither has any knowledge of the "control head". They both said that it may be a dealer part. Do you have any other ideas?

Yup, probably a dealer part. Another benefit to owning these cars, unfortunately .

I would say if it IS your problem, get a used one and take a gamble.
