Whining?

Hey guys, I've got a friend who has an 86 Ford Bronco II with a 4 speed transmission and overdrive. The vehicle whines in every gear except for 4th. It stops if you let off the accelerator, but starts back if you apply throttle. It seems pretty obvious that it's a transmission problem but wondered if anyone had any ideas to what it might be and if it's gonna be major or minor. Thanks for any help.

Torque converter or other internal failure. Change the fluid and filter as a precaution, but it's not likely to help.

If the truck is in good shape, it warrants a rebuilt. You don't say what the mileage is or the overall condition is of said vehicle.

A good rebuilt can exceed the value of the truck. If the body is rotten or the rest of the truck is beat up, it might not warrant a rebuilt.
