Go to Autozone. Rent their OBDII computer scanner.

Put it on your car and pull the codes. Tell us what you find.

The night before last, my check engine light came on too. I have a 1997 Dodge Stratus. Would I use the same tester? How would I even go about resetting the computer. I heard that some of the computers have a 9v battery that may need to be periodically replaced - is that true?

Yes, same tester, likely a different adapter.

9V battery is news to me.

Some oil change lamps (BMW for one) have batteries, but not the main computer.

It's not remote controlled

Joe is correct on this, shouldn't be any battery involved.....after scanning the codes with the OBDII unit you use the scan tool to "erase" all the stored codes, then you're good to go until the next episode...if MIL light comes on again, you haven't solved the original problem or have developed a new one......
