Steering Wheel play

Just yesterday my 88 Ford Ranger with 2.9 V6 motor, has delveloped a quater turn play in the steering wheel before the wheels will turn. The power steering fluid level is ok and after taking up the slack in the steering wheel the wheels turns freely as if power steering is still operating. Last week it was pulled a 1/2 mile to a service station because it would not start (cracked distributor cap). Could this some how have caused this problem and how do I fix it.

Mileage?

Might have worn front end parts. Have the front end checked out by a competent repair shop.

The truck has 191,000 miles on it. Wouldn't worn front end parts apear gradually rather than suddenly?
