Question distributor shaft

I was told that a common problem on a 92' acura/honda 1.8ltr engine is that the shaft wears causing the distributer to "wander past the #1 position which causes the car to idle up until the distributer resets itself or finds the true #1 position. The car does rev up occasionally, especially in cold weather. I believe this could be the problem but I was told it would cost $560 to fix it. I've rebuilt older car engines and done a considerable amount of work on variouse domestic engines. How difficult would it be to do the work myself?

Not very, but the problem might be a bad idle air control valve or gunk in the throttle body causing the problem. Check it out.
