Speedometer goes out

I have a 1989 chevy pickup, 1/2 ton, automatic, with a 350 engine. When I'm driving the speedometer and odometer, and cruise, goes out completely. I can slap the top of the dash with my hand and it will come back on. It started doing it once a day, now every 10 miles or so. Have taken console{gauges} in dash apart and screwed it in tight, but still have problem. Help!!!

Problem in the cluster or ground.

The cluster can be tested by most parts stores or Delco test centers, so find a parts store that deals with one and they can check it for you.

What is the cluster, and what ground are you referring too?

Ya, that's why the service manual or wiring diagram is needed . It shows you what grounds go to where.

The cluster is the unit that houses all the gauges and speedometer.
