alternator ... trying to diagnose

1985 Chevy Nova 1.6.....The Alt. dash light is on. When I rev. up the engine to a high rpm the light goes off for a couple of sec. As soon as the rpms drop the light comes back on. I'm guessing that the brushes are in need of replacement. The belt is tight.......what do you think ??

Probably a bad diode set. What make, model vehicle? Most auto parts stores can test your alternator for you, free of charge.

Best bet is to replace it with a rebuilt unit.

Alternators can be rebuilt, but it's a bit daunting for a DIY person without the right shop manual/tools.

A factory rebuilt is the most cost effective way.
