Pinging Ford

I have a 1990 Ford F250 that has started to ping when I accelerate. It only pings for a few seconds then goes away as I continue to accelerate. The timing is right on at 10 dbtdc. I only purchase gas at national chains like U76 and Texico. It's a fuel injected 351. What causes pinging besides timing?

Make sure you are using the recommended octane gas for your truck. Higher octane may cure the pinging, but the rule is to use the lowest octane you can, without experiencing ping. Check out this link to learn more about gasoline & octane ratings.

Also EGR valve pintle clogging and carbon deposits will cause this and are common on Ford.

There are aftermarket EGR valve gaskets with screens that are supposed to aid in this problem.
