check engine light

I hope you can help me.

I have a 1997 Honda Prelude and my check engine light is on.
I would prefer not to have a diagnostic test done only because it is expensive.

Where can I find a website for computer codes for my car? If there are computer codes, can I do it myself? Or do I need a diagnostic test done?

Please let me know, thanks.

if your dash light is on constantly something is seriously amiss and it should be checked immediately....you will need an OBDII code scanner to retrieve your trouble codes from 96 and later vehicles....if you don't want to buy one (they are pricey) you can rent or borrow one from some auto parts outlets such as Autozone....the instruction manual with the scanner should have the code listings or you can try www.autolibrary.org & check the Chilton's site....if you purchase a Hayne's or Chilton's repair manual for your car the codes are detailed in there also.....good luck....

I agree with Mooser. He is on the right track.
