Ford Escort 1.8 Gti Idle problem

I am the owner of a Ford Escort 1.8 GTi, R-Reg (1997) UK

The car is fitted with a Stainless Longlife Performance exhaust, and a KN 57I induction kit. 2 weeks ago I replaced the spark plugs and HT leads.

Recently the car has developed an idling fault. When the car is started from cold, the tick-over oscillates between 1,500rpm and 500rpm. The only way to stop this is to put your foot on the gas for about 10 seconds. The car then idles smoothly. The other fault occurs whether the engine is hot or cold. If you rev the engine the idle speed drops below 500rpm, and then recovers. This symptom also occurs when slowing down in traffic, when the clutch is depressed.

Could you please advise as to what might be the fault?

I do believe you are talking about an English Escort, which we do not get here. Please state what year vehicle we are talking about as well.

See my signature file for some ideas, however they apply to North American vehicles. You might want to check for any fault codes in the computer if so equipped. Hunting idle is indicative of a bad idle air control valve or carbonized throttle bodies on US cars.
