1991 Camry Power Steering
I have a small problem with my father's Camry. The power steering acts like it "sticks", mostly when cold. Basically, if the car is stopped, and you try to turn the steering wheel if feels like something is blocking the wheels from turning. At the same time, but not always, the PS belt is squeeking. I know that either the steering rack or the PS pump is bad. The question I have is which one is more likely to cause the problem.

That's lovely.... it doesn't look like an easy task. What will happen if I just leave it "as is"? Will the steering system just fall apart? Or will it just be difficult to turn?

This is where good old GM comes into play.
My coworker wiped out the box on his 88 Caprice.
One call and a couple hours later he installed a new box. Under 150 bucks for a new one. Done .
Nothing like good old recirculating ball type steering. Far superior to rack and pinion in every way in my belief .
I agree with these guys. Change the rack.

I've found the rack at http://www.oem-car-parts.com/ for $230. Not so bad, other then the fact that my father will not agree to fix it until it breaks down. He's one of those guys that strongly believes that if it's not fully broken down, it's still good. It will be tough to convince him... but I'll try.

That's not nice..... can't do that to my father.
On another note, would it be possible to replace the rack without a lift? Don't have that in my garage yet.....
