1992 Mitsubishi Montero reverse light

Hello!
I have an incredibly reliable 1992 Mistsubishi Montero. I have had the truck for seven years with minimal repair work other than maintenance needed.
I noticed that the reverse lights weren't working and replaced the fuse. I now have reverse lights that are constantly on. Can anyone help me?
Thank you for any insight

Check the reverse light switch.

On old cars with 4 speeds, it was common practice to install headers. By doing so, folks removed the back drive mechanism and the lights would be constantly on.

Safe to say no one installed headers on a Montero, but they likely pulled the fuse because the lights were always on and didn't want to deal with the problem.

What did checking the light switch reveal?

What does your service manual say?

Check the information in my signature file for some ideas.
