fuel problems

I am having fuel problems with my 1994 Mercury Tracer 1.9L. It started with a loss of power, especially when trying to accelerate. One night suddenly it started spraying gas somewhere in the engine (strong smell of gas, fuel guage went from 1/2 to empty). I changed the fuel filter and added fuel injector cleaner, which seemed to work for a little while, and also tightened the air intake hose. But today, I lost all my fuel again. After letting the car sit for a little while, and adding new gas, the problem has gone away (for now). Could it be the fuel pump, or is it something else? Please help.

If it is spraying fuel from a connection, you likely have a broken line somewhere or something is loose. Get it rectified right away.
