the brake light stays on but brakes working ok what could be the problem?

I would suggest to check your brake fluid reservoir, as it maybe low. You should rectify this problem ASAP. As your brakes is the only way to stop the car. You may have a leak somewhere. Good luck. Keep me posted.

Assuming we are talking about the warning light on the dash:
1) Either you left the parking brake on.
or
2) There is a hydraulic issue making the fluid level drop. As OM said, have it rectified right away.
