overheating on a 93 escort
I have a 1993 ford escort, 1.9 litre engine, automatic trans.
While Idling, the car will run "hot". I have yet to see the Electric fan turn on. However if I turn the Air conditioner on, the fan comes on immediately and the engine then cools off.
I've replaced the "coolant temperature SENSOR" but it did not make a difference.
If I uplug the coolant temperature sensor, then the fan turns on but runs continuously.
I've checked the wiring via a "haynes" manual, but can not determine where the low and high speed relays are.
Any Ideas or help would be appreciated.
thanks.

Definitely the cooling system needs cleaning out. but, should the fan not turn on if it is running hot?
and by the way, it's not extremely hot, it is just that the gauge indication slowly goes up, especially if idling for a while, and when the engine is turned off you can hear the water in the radiator sizzling.

If the cooling system has not seen maintenance in a while, start there.
If fluid is sizzling out, that's overheating. Don't drive it until you rectify it.
Blowing the head gasket is possible when you overheat, so you'll cause a lot of grief and expense.

93 escort overheating
I just installed a brand new radiator, removed all hoses on vehicle and flush heator core, block, changed thermostat, both coolant sensor/sender still running hot.
The fan still does not come on unless I either turn on the Air conditioning or pull the wires off of the coolant temperature sensor. And of course when I do this the check engine light comes on. I am so lost.

I appreciate your time and efforts with me thanks.
I changed the head gasket, the thermostat, the coolant sensor, the temperature sender, all at the same time the new radiator was put in this weekend.
My last guess would be the low speed or high speed fan relay. Haven't been able to locate it yet, although the fan comes on when the air conditioner is on.
I also found last night that according to the "haynes" manual, a 1993 coolant sensor wires are one color whereas mine are a different color. Upon further investigation, I found my wire colors to be the same as a 1997 model. perhaps I should start at this point.(the very beginning). Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
One other point, when the car is first started, the fan does start to spin and then stops. I pretty sure this is normal.
help!
