excessive jerking

I just bought a 1990 jeep cherokee w/ 4.0. Vehicle jerks between 35mph and 55mph. when I downshift to keep rpm's up it does not jerk. is it a u-joint and how do I check it?

Sounds like something wrong with the overdrive if it kicks in and out.

Have a tranny shop look at it. Might be a stuck OD solenoid or bad torque converter.
