1995 Ford Ranger

This is probably a Fordtech question but here goes. My brother in law's '95 Ranger has a problem with the A/C controls. Allow me to specify. Both the Heater and the A/C work fine. The selector knob seems to be stuck on "defrost" only. But it only blows through the defrost ports. You CAN select the Mix, the Panel, and even the Floor setting; however these do not change anything. I know on older cars (like my late '88 ford escort ) you had a direct linkage to the baffle's deflector. But it's not like that on newer cars is it? So is it a bad motor (or solenoid or something) hiding back in there? And are these hard to get to/replace?

Knowledge is appreciated.

Usually, there is a vacuum switch that diverts the air where it is supposed to go. On a GM, this is an 8 dollar part .

That being said, hit the Ford dealer's parts counter for an exploded view of the control and what's back there.
