Transmission trouble

Over the past few months my transmission in my 1988 Ford Mustang LX 2.3 litre has been having trouble kicking into gear. Now Reverse, Drive(3rd) and Overdrive(4th) gears do not work. Reverse works if I push it enough for a bit. And 3rd and 4th won't stay in, they over rev and it goes back to 2nd gear.
This problem only occurs when the car is heated up, when the car is cold it runs fine.
I have had a few people tell me it was different things. I have just gotten to the point of replacing the whole transmission and I also need to know how to do that. Would you happen to know what the problem is and/or how to change a transmission?

Try changing the fluid and filter first. Likely has internal failure though and needs a rebuild. How many miles on it. Also it's a 2.3 liter, not a 2.5

That being said, check the links in my signature file for some ideas or pick up a service manual to learn the procedure on changing over the unit.
