66 chevy big block-oil filter adapter

i'm changing over from a canister type oil filter to a spin on adapter,my question is on the original piece thats under the adapter i'm about to put on,it has a hole in the side at an angle with a spring holding it shut, what has me puzzled is which way or if it matters, does this hole face? it can only go one of two ways,it can face in towards the block or face outward, i dont have a clue, all of this was missing off of the block, any ideas?

What do the instructions with the kit have to say about it?

pressure valve

Is it your pressure spring and ball that acts as an anti flow back and oil pressure valve? If so as long as it is not covered by any parts you are installing ,it does not matter.

Never assume. If the directions are poor, contact the company and make them give you better advice.
