Motor Oil

84 chevy K-10 350 4bbl miles on engine I'm not sure of. It says 49450 on odm. now but I think engine has been replaced vin numbers say it's a 305 but valve covers say goodwrench 350.

Here's my ? when truck sits for a few days or more it throws out
white smoke out tail pipe for the first 1/4 mile then go's away.
I'm thinking valve guides leaking. I'm useing 10w-30 now. Would
20w-50 help with the leaking guides. Plugs do not get fouled with
oil. And engine runs good accept for that. What do you guys think?

if your not having any coolant loss it is probably just condensation in the exhaust system, worn valve guides or seals would cause smoke after just sitting overnight or in some cases if bad enough aftere sitting for an hour.

Well! it will smoke after sitting for a hour or so but just a little puff
or two not has much as a few days sitting. There is no coolet loss
or overheating. How about oil additves to help with the seals?

there really isn't an additive that would help with the problem the factory seals get hard and brittle and are most likely missing due to breakage.
if it is really bothering you may want to see about having new guide seals installed.

I agree with Bejay. What color is the smoke you are seeing? What does it smell like? Does it hang in the air like a haze/fog? Condensation breaks up in the air pretty quickly.

That gives an indicator of what is burning.

10W30 is too thin. I'd use 10W40 on an old horse like this, but check with the owner's manual for their recommendations. They still apply after all these years.

Thanks guys for the replys. Do you guys think 20w-50 is to thick of
A oil to use for this engine. And the smoke is white and stays around if no wind. Smells like oil to me but not that strong.

If it is burning 10W40, only 20W50 will attempt to stop that.

If the smoke is white and sweet, that is coolant burning.
