Radiator fan won't turn on

1997 town and country 3.8L V6 van. Van overheats with A/C on. Radiator fan does not turn on. I disconnected the plug leading from the radiator fans to the solid state fan relay bolted to the firewall near the radiator drain plug and connected the wires to check the fan motors themselves. The fans turned on when I did this. There are no other fan relays in the fusebox. Does this solid state relay go bad? The dealer wants $60.00 for this relay, but I don't want to try this if there might be something else typical for this condition with this model vehicle.

Check the links in my signature file for some diagnostic links and ideas. Yes, the relays do go bad. Any parts store should have them as well, and they are probably a bit cheaper.

That being said, look at a wiring diagram and see if you can power up the relay to see if it's bad or you can hear it click.

You may also want to check the fan switch and coolant sensor.
