1996 Windstar Transaxle 3speed w/od

Any with advice on what to do on an 96 Windstar w/3.8 L 3 speed w/od transmission that does fine and then kicks down to 2nd gear or 3rd (when in od) and stays there? Doesn't appear to be any slippage and it will shift form 1st to 2nd most of time. I scanned the computer and 0500 came up. I replaced the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) as the code indicated and it did fine for a day and a half. Same error came on again and the od on/off light came on (was one during first case) and the check engine light came on. Code was 0500 again and I reset. Lights haven't come on again but after a pretty long day of driving, it will drop back down to second again. Then so far it has self corrected but all of this w/no trouble light. Car has 90k on it and is in great shape and has been maintained well. Transmission fluids good, new filter etc. Need help.....

Likely a stuck solenoid or other internal failure.

Check alldata.com for known bulletins/issues on this problem.

No shortage of woes or problems, including tranny woes on this model.

Worth a look for the full bulletin. Check with any dealer for the full printout of any bulletins that match your symptoms.
