lights grows dimmed in the night

Recently, I noticed that my head lights dimmed during the night on my Mazada MPV 1991, rear wheel drive. But I have no problem starting the car. I tightenned the alternator belt, but no improvement. Some of my friends at work told me that the problem is the alternator.
Not sure?

Some dimming is normal as the load on the alternator might exceed the output at that moment until the unit kicks in again.

Easiest way to check the alternator is to follow the procedure I have in my links and signature files on charging system testing. If it fails that, time for a new alternator. An OEM rebuilt is suggested for best performance.

If the alt. test good and you are still having lighting prob. check the ground wire going to the finder are frame. A loose are dirty ground cable are wire will cause a dime light also.--Good Luck- Dave
