quick purchase question

I will be buying a new (used) compact car 94-97. I have been told that the toyotas are quite user friendly to repair for the do it myselfers. I was also told that a few other models are similiar to the quality and reliabilty of the toyota without the cost. The newer escorts had been suggested to me . True?
Is a short list of options possible or a link?

Thanks again for helping with the old klunk these last couple of years

Escorts are heaps and lackluster. Stay away from them.

Most small cars are nothing to write home about, but the Corolla and Camry aren't bad cars and will be quite reliable over time and are fairly straight forward to repair.
