starter?

I have a 1989 Dodge Aries, automatic, engine (2.2).When i try to start my car I hear a whinning noise.Sometimes it takes many tries before it will start. Is this a bad starter?Could it possibly be the timing belt?

Sounds like a bad starter to me. Whack on it with a hammer when it happens again. If it works fine after that, bad starter. Replace it with a rebuilt.

If you had a timing belt problem, the car would not likely start.
