will a steering gear box from an 86 trans am fit in a 88 firebird?

Yep, a likely swap. Most T/A's have fast ratio boxes, and that's why they are chosen to swap into base cars.

The best boxes are ones from WS6 cars like my 79 Trans Am. Common to swap them to other cars.

To find out if it's a direct swap, just call any junkyard with a Hollander interchange manual. They can tell you in a jiffy. The book answers that exact question you asked.
