smoke?

74 chevy 350 crate engine, when I start it up there is some brief smoke, for a second or two then it goes away, I was told that it was probably the valve seals! any truth or thoughts on what it is from?

sounds true to me. if the engine runs good i would leave it alone as long as it only smokes for a few seconds. the oil that passes through the seals will also prelube the upper cylinder when cold starting.

I agree. Likely valve stem seals. Chevy V8s are notorious for that.
