1989 Camero has starting problems

I have a 1989 chevy camero rs with a 350 engine. I have put several new starters and a new battery on this car but sometimes when you turn the key you get nothing. All normal functions such as lights, horn etc. work fine but the starter does not turn. The solinoid doesn't even make a sound. If you short the solinoid for a moment the starter engages normally. Then you can turn the key and the car will start fine. You can keep starting it for awhile and then you get nothing again and have to start the process again. I have exhausted my knowledge well and those of freinds and still haven't been able to solve this problem. Any help would be accepted greatfully.
Thank you

Heat soak. The solenoid must be shielded or else it will get too hot.

The OE heat shield is probably missing. Order one from any dealer. Also, only use AC Delco reman starters. They are the best out there.

Performance catalogs also have them too.
