The air conditioner clutch will not engage. Do I need to replace the compressor, or is there anything I should check?

could be

low / no refrigerant. There is a low pressure switch which will not let the compressor engage in such circumstances.

Low pressure cut off switch.

Find your low pressure cut off switch. Unplug the 2 wire plug and shunt it to by pass the switch. If you are just low on coolant the compressor will engage & run. If not start running down your power and check your fuses. At least the shunt trick may save you some work.
