Diag codes, 96 Corolla

Folks:

Have read your previous posts on diag codes. Have also jumped over to bat.auto (thanks, Joe!) for a look. My problem could be simple - 96 Corolla with 1.8L has check engine light on after I changed plug wires (that can be a stretch to no. 1 cyl). I followed Haynes and jumped appropriate terminals under the hood, but the light on the dash stayed on, instead of flashing as it ought to have. Could it be the 3 sec. interval between plugging the terminals (ignition on, engine off, accessories off, throttle closed, etc) and sticking my head back iin the pass. compartment was too long? Did I miss the code?
Thanks,
Firstshift

You need an OBDII compliant code reader to read the codes on your car.

Go to Autozone or any parts retailer and see if you can rent one. Jumping the terminals doesn't always work on OBDII.
