power loss and thanks Joe

1989 ford aerostar/standard/3.0 engine/260,000 miles/tune up is due. recent oil change and transie fluid change.
no problem in stop and go traffic and no clutch problem
releasing the clutch in 4th or 5th gear putting it in neutral and applying the brakes to slow down the engine stalls. But it starts right back up. i do here a whirring pulsing noise from time to timeand the battery gauge fluctuates. Going to check for vacuum leaks and replace the pcv valve today. but if you have any other helpful advice it would be appreciated besides time for a new van, lol.
great site and thanks again. Pete

Check your alternator output as outlined in my "The Basics" post below.
