'92 Ranger Idle Problems
My '92 Ranger (4.0 L - 6 cyln.) revs up to over 2000 rpm when I start it then it slows to about 1000-1100 after about 5 seconds (still seems to idle kind of high--I hardly have to touch the gas pedal around town).
I had it in the shop a while back for similar problems (it would rev to about 4000 and stay there). They told me it was vacuum troubles--a couple of hoses had fallen off. They were replaced and clamped on...trouble seemed to go away.
Also, there is white smoke & water from the tailpipe once in a while.
Are these things related? I had a Throttle Position Controller replaced a short time ago...could it be gone again? Is there something I can adjust? (I am by no means a mechanic but I USED to be able to find my way around under the hood back before fuel injectors, etc.)

you probably have another vacum leak i would check the vacum lines that hook onto the intake on the drivers side and make sure non of them has fallen off, also if it is an automatic it may have a vacum modulator that may be leaking and causing some smoke that you mentioned and the transmission fluid will cause all the rubber hoses at the fitting to swell up and fall off causing a vacum leak.

However, many Fords have IAC (Idle Air Control) valve problems that cause racing/idle hunting. Another commo problem is dirt/soot in the throttle body. Ford makes a special cleaner for use on their stuff so as not to remove the protective coating on it.

You might want to have a good look at the intake manifold gaskets. They were quite problematic on this era 4.0L & can cause both coolant loss (white smoke from the tailpipe) as well as a high idle condition.
TSB 95-9-10 addresses the issue. Ask your Ford dealer for a copy of it.

Thanks for all the help guys :-) I just had the transmission overhauled and can't afford to take the machine in for more repairs.
