1990 Cougar Brake Light Prob

My brake lights only respond when my pedal is almost to the floor. Since, I don't drive around slamming on my brakes, it appears I have no brake lights. I don't know what the problem is, Please help. Not looking forward to the ticket!
Thanks A Million

Check your brake light switch. Most Ford products don't have an adjustment, but the switch itself could be bad.

A couple of bucks at any parts store.

what does the switch look like

I think I found the switch but I'm not sure because I don't know what one looks like. It was a black box with a purple spring inside. It also had another black box with green and white wires coming out going to the fuse box. How do I tell if it's bad??

It's on the brake pedal and is a curved piece like you described.

Most Fords have a cotter pin type clip that holds the rod in place. Take it off, note the sequence of parts (washers, bushings, etc).

The switch twists up and out off the bracket.

Leaving it plugged in, try actuating it by hand by pushing the plunger. If you really have to push it far to make the lights go on (Have a helper in the back of the car tell you when the lights go on and off) it's probably bad.
