changing the waterpump

i have a 1989 ford e-150 econoline 4.9 litre 300 straight 6.i'm trying to change the waterpump for the first time but the fan(belt driven) is held on with a large nut.how the heck do you get that sucker off.i've left the belt on to help hold it but to no avail.please help.

Most of those fan nuts are left handed threads.You have to turn the nut to the right to loosen.I usually use a fan clutch wrench(you can rent them from Autozone)and smack the wrench with a hammer a few times to loosen the nut.Good luck,sometimes their a pain!!

thanks for answering my question.well it worked and the fan came off.unfortunately it snapped the bolt on the waterpump and it's stuck in the fanclutch.ahhh,the nightmare begins.time to find a good tap and die kit.oh well,thanks again.
