1989 ford taurus overheating

problem, taurus overheats, fan is not starting when engine is hot, fan will run when directly conected to battery. thromostat has been replaced, also regulator. help

It could be your coolant fan switch mounted near the thermostat housing.I believe in that year they also used an IRCM(integrated relay control module),which is an expensive item.I've seen people just wire they're fan to a toggle switch and operate it that way due to the cost of the relay module.
Try to locate the coolant fan switch (ask a dealer or look in shop manual for location) and either unplug or groud the wire to it.If the fan comes on it's probably just the switch.
