overheating eclipse

I have a 92 Mitsubishi Eclipse(1.8L, non turbo, DOHC). It keeps overheating. The fans work. I'm not sure when the last coolant system servicing was. I'm pretty sure the water pump is working. I have replaced the thermostat. I get white smoke out of the tail pipe every now and then.

If the white smoke is sweet smelling, you have a blown head gasket or a warped/cracked head.

Any shop can check for the presence of hydrocarbons in the coolant, which indicates a blown gasket/cracked head.
