Grand Am tranny
I just bought an 86' Pontiac Grand Am 4cyl. auto. to get back and forth to work. Last Week I drove appx. 25 miles to the next town at about 60mph. When I came to the 1st red light and slowed down the car started jerking like I was in a higher gear and it quit. I put it in park and it started right up, but as soon as I put it in gear to go it died again once again i put it in park and it started right up. It did this a few more times before it actually cought. As long as I'm in town going a short distance it is fine. Please help me with this problem.

sounds like a torque convertor clutch solenoid problem , causing the fluid not to release pressure on the torquee convertor clutch, there is a square plug in on the transmission that you can unplug and will prevent the tcc from engaging the plug in is facing the front of the car, you may want to take to a transmission shop and have fixed, it will reduce your gas mileage a couple miles per gallon if left unplugged.

It sounds like bejay could be right about the torque converter lock-up.
There should be two sets of contacts on the brakelight switch.
One is for the brake lights and the other disengages the torque converter upon braking.
If you disconnect the plug on the transmission and your problem goes away, that could be the trouble.
I am in the process of wiring up the torque converter on my latest project and do not yet have the brakelight switch connected.
If I do not disengage the converter before slowing down it does something like you describe.
I'm not sure what transmission you have but I also know that on my 700R4 transmission that if the TV cable isn't adjusted right, the tranny doesn't shift properly. Maybe your transmission is also not downshifting soon enough.
